Jawaharlal Nehru: A man for all Indians, and a legacy worth preserving
Jawaharlal
Nehru’s legacy is beyond any political formation, and will continue to
be relevant for generations to come. He belongs to the entire nation,
and his ideals are cherished to this day by Indians belonging to all
groups.
Jawaharlal Nehru, who shaped the destiny of the country after Independence, continues to be relevant several decades after his death.

Faced with an onslaught on Nehru’s ideals by the NDA government after the Congress was decimated in the Lok Sabha polls, Sonia used the occasion to line up “secular” parties like the CPI-M, CPI, Trinamool Congress, RJD, BSP, JD(S) and JD(U), all of whom are BJP rivals.
Besides Congress vice-president Rahul
Gandhi, former prime minister Manmohan Singh and several senior leaders
were present at the Jawaharlal Nehru Commemorative International
Conference.
Among those
who attended the meet were West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee,
senior CPI(M) leaders Prakash Karat and Sitaram Yechury, former prime
minister and JD(S) chief H.D. Deve Gowda, JD(U) chief Sharad Yadav, CPI
leader D. Raja and NCP general secretary D.P. Tripathi.
The
event was also attended by around 90 foreign delegates, including
former Afghan president Hamid Karzai, South African freedom fighter
Ahmed Kathrada, and Nabil Shaath, chief negotiator of Palestine.
Delegations from China, Africa, Bangladesh and Nepal were also present.
