2013 Karnataka Assembly Election Results -Wednesday May 08,2013


The Congress returned to power in Karnataka after seven years, defeating the ruling party BJP

The final tally of seats are -
  • Congress  121 seats(+42 seats)
  • BJP 40 seats(-70 seats)
  • JDS  40 seats(+12 seats)
  • KJP  6 seats(+6 seats)
  • Other parties and Independents won 16 seats(+10 seats)

The assembly has 224 elected and one nominated members. The election took place on Sunday May 05,2013  for 223 seats. Polling was cancelled in one place as the BJP candidate died.

The Congress Party(INC)got a clear majority on its own in a triangular fight, the party is now set to form the government on its own in Karnataka.

The Congress victory "is a clear result against the ideology of the BJP",  Manmohan Singh said in New Delhi.

BJP leader Rajiv Pratap Rudy was more forthright: "We have lost badly... There are many reasons for it. We will have to introspect."

"We will be happy to be the main opposition. We will play our role well," JD-S leader H.D. Kumaraswamy said

Former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa's Karnataka Janata Paksha could not make a mark and managed to win just a handful of seats. However, his absence from the BJP did hit the party hard leading to its massive defeat

Congress wins in Periyapatna

Congress candidate K. Venkatesh who polled 62,045 votes defeated his nearest rival, K. Mahadev who polled 59,957 votes of the Janata Dal (Secular) by a margin of just over 2,000 votes in the Assembly election from Periyapatna constituency, the results of which were declared on Friday May 31,2013

There were eight candidates in the fray, of whom six forfeited their deposits.

With this victory, the Congress has retained the constituency and increased its tally in the 224-member Assembly from 121 to 122 seats.

Note

The election was postponed from May 5 to May 28 after the death of the BJP candidate Sannamoge Gowda
