2017 Armenian Parliamentary Election Sunday April 02,2017

The 2017 Armenian Parliamentary Election is scheduled to be held on Sunday April 02,2017

This Parliamentary Election will be the first elections after a Constitutional Referendum in 2015 that approved reforms for the country to become a Parliamentary Republic

The polls come after constitutional amendments initiated by Sarkisian in 2015 that his opponents say were designed to keep the ruling Republican Party in power.
The changes were passed after a referendum, but they also prompted thousands to rally in protest.
The amendments will shift the country away from strong presidency to a parliamentary form of government after Sarkisian's second and final term ends in 2018.

Sunday's election is expected to be a close race between the majority-wielding Republican Party of Armenia, backed by President Serzh Sarkisian, and an alliance of businessman and former world champion arm wrestler Gagik Tsarukyan's Prosperous Armenia party.

The 2015 Constitutional REferendum has reduced the number of National Assembly Seats to 101(131 seats in 2012)

Electoral System

Voters vote for a party at the national level and can also give a preference vote to a any of candidates of the same party in a district list

Seats are allocated to parties using the share of the vote at the national level, with half awarded to those in the national list and half to those who receive the most preference votes in the district lists

If a party receives a majority of the vote but gets less than 54% of the seats, they will be awarded additional seats to give them 54% of the total. If a party wins over two-thirds of seats, the losing parties will be given extra seats reducing the share of seats of winning party to two-thirds.

If a government is not formed within six days of the preliminary results being released, a run-off round of voting between the top two parties must be held within 28 days

Ruling party wins Armenian parliamentary vote

President Serzh Sarksyan’s ruling Republican Party won elections in Armenia on Sunday, official results showed, laying the foundation for a new parliamentary system of government.
The Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) had 49.12 percent of the votes while the opposition Tsarukyan Alliance led by wealthy businessman Gagik Tsarukyan gathered 27.32 percent.
The government-loyal Dashnaktsutyun Party had 6.57 percent and the opposition bloc Yelk (“Way Out”) 7.77 percent, enough for both to enter parliament.
Central Election Commission chairman Tigran Mukuchyan said the figures were based on results from all 2,009 polling stations.
