Usain Bolt ended his Olympic career by claiming an unprecedented 'triple
triple' and his ninth gold as Jamaica won the 4x100m relay final in
Rio.
Jamaica's Usain Bolt
brought the curtain down on a glittering Olympic career that landed him
nine gold medals and a place in the history books that he so badly
desired.
It was the 'triple triple' — 9 straight sprint gold medals won over 3 Olympics - 2008 Beijing;2012 London and 2016 Rio and in 12 years.
It leaves Bolt - who will retire in 2017 - level with Carl Lewis and
Paavo Nurmi on a total of nine Olympic gold medals, a record for a track
and field athlete.
The relay gold was the final act of an
incredible Olympic career that redefined athletics and often left
commentators scrambling to find a new vocabulary of superlatives as each
new milestone came and went.
'There you
go, I am the greatest,' Bolt said. 'I am just relieved. It's happened. I
am just happy, proud of myself. It's come true. The pressure is real. I
look at it as an accomplishment.'
Jamaica's Usain Bolt
knew that being the first over the line with the baton on the last leg
of the 4x100m relay, which had been carried beforehand by his three
Jamaican team mates, would seal his outstanding track record.
No
other man has won — or possibly is likely to — nine Olympic gold medals
in the manner that Bolt has, beating all challengers from Beijing,
through London and into Rio.

Officials had tried to prevent it being handed to him, but a friend
grabbed it and gave it to him
Jamaica took gold at 37.27
Japan took Silver with 37.60 and
USA finished third at 37.62.
However,Team USA, which had placed third in the race was disqualified for
handing the baton too early — instead leaving the bronze medal to Canada
This is the moment that earned the American racers disqualification, as
they handed the baton too early between the first and second sprinters
Team USA finished the race third, but the early hand off led them to be disqualified, moving Canada up into the bronze spot
