Prime Minister Narendra Modi launches '' Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana '' in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh,India Sunday May 01,2016

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday May 01,2016 launched the Rs. 8,000 crore scheme to provide 5 crore free cooking gas connections to Below Poverty Line (BPL) families from Uttar Pradesh's Ballia.

Under the scheme, the government will provide Rs. 8,000 crore over the next three financial years so that BPL families do not have to pay Rs. 1,600 per connection for the administrative cost, pressure regulator booklet and safety hose.

The connections would be given to the women members of the BPL households and the LPG subsidy amount for refills will also be deposited in the Jan Dhan Accounts of the women members.

"I selected Ballia because the average LPG penetration in BPL households is lower than even that in Uttar Pradesh. In Ballia, on an average only 8 out of 100 BPL families have LPG connections,"  Prime Minister Narendra Modi said

The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, to be run essentially using the money saved from 1.13 crore cooking gas users voluntarily giving up their subsidies, aims to provide cooking gas connections to 5 crore women beneficiaries from BPL families over the next three years
