Veterinary College playground on Tuesday May 24,2016
This will be the first BJP-led government in Assam. BJP and its allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland Peoples Front (BPF) created history by winning 86 seats in the 126-member Assembly
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP president Amit Shah and several union ministers will head to Assam today for the oath ceremony of Sarbananda Sonowal at the head of the first BJP government in the North East.
Also present at the grand ceremony this evening at the Khanapara rally ground in Guwahati will be the chief ministers of states that the BJP and its allies rule and leaders of the party's partners in the National Democratic Alliance or NDA.
Also attending today's ceremony is Tarun Gogoi, the Congressman who was chief minister of Assam for 15 years
Sarbananda Sonowal is expected to be sworn in along with 10 ministers, including Himanta Biswa Sarma, the leader who crossed over to the BJP from the Congress last year and is credited with adding much fire power to the BJP's campaign in this election.
There will be six ministers from the BJP and four from its pre-poll allies - two from the Asom Gana Parishad or AGP and two from the Bodoland People's Front (BPF). They will be sworn in at 4.30 pm.
The sprawling Khanapara ground has been prepared to accommodate one lakh people today. Two separate enclosures have been made to seat dignitaries. The entire venue will be covered as the Met office predicts light rain
80,000 chairs have also been arranged for the public. The venue is elongated and huge LED screens have been put up in the middle. A cultural programme of Assamese music and dance will precede the oath ceremony.
Sarbananda Sonowal won from the Majuli seat defeating sitting Congress MLA Rajib Lochan Pegu by a margin of 18,923 votes
Sarbananda Sonowal started his political journey in 1992 when he became president of the All Assam Students' Union (AASU). Sonowal entered the Lok Sabha in 2004, defeating Union minister Ranee Narah of Congress from Lakhimpur constituency.
In 2011, Sarbananda Sonowal quit AGP to join BJP. In 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP led by Sonowal in the state won seven seats in the state
Sarbananda Sonowal was made the Union Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs in the Narendra Modi government.
