2015-16 FWA Footballer of the Year Award - Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy voted Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers' Association (FWA)



Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy has been voted Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers' Association (FWA)


The 29-year-old has scored 22 league goals to help fire his team from 5,000-1 outsiders to odds-on favourites to win the Premier League title for the first time this season.

Jamie Vardy, who built his career away from the spotlight at Stocksbridge, Halifax and Fleetwood Town, became the first player to score in 11 consecutive Premier League matches earlier this season.

Jamie Vardy, who won 36 percent of the vote, is the first Englishman to win the award since Scott Parker in 2011 and the first Leicester player to win it since it was started in 1948.

In winning the award, Jamie Vardy beat team mates Riyad Mahrez and N'Golo Kante, who finished second and third, while Danny Drinkwater, Kasper Schmeichel, Wes Morgan and Danny Simpson were the other Leicester players who received votes

 About FWA Footballer of the Year Award 

The Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year (often called the FWA Footballer of the Year, or in England simply the Footballer of the Year) is an annual award given to the player who is adjudged to have been the best of the season in English Football

The award has been presented since the 1947-48 season, when the inaugural winner was Blackpool winger Stanley Mathews

The winner is selected by a vote amongst the members of the Football Writer's Association(FWA) which comprises around 400 football journalists based throughout England

8 players have won the award on more than one occasion, the most recent being Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United) who won the award in  2006-07 and 2007-08

Thierry Henry(Arsenal)  has won the award on the most occasions, having won thrice in 4 seasons - 2002-03;2003-04 and 2005-06

The award has been presented on 69 occasions as of 2015, with 60 different winners
