2016 UEFA Europa League Final Liverpool Vs Sevilla Wednesday May 18,2016

2016 UEFA Europa League Final Liverpool Vs Sevilla Match Preview

  • This is the first meeting between Liverpool and Sevilla.
  • Sevilla (four) and Liverpool (three) have both won all of their finals in the Europa League/Uefa Cup.
  • It is Liverpool's first European final since 2007, when they lost 2-1 to AC Milan in the Champions League final.
  • It will be Liverpool's 12th major European final, having previously reached seven Champions League/European Cup finals, three Europa League/UEFA Cup finals and one Cup Winners Cup final.
  • The Reds have won eight of those finals (73%), plus three European Super Cups.
  • Liverpool have won each of their two European finals against Spanish opposition, beating Real Madrid in the 1981 European Cup and Alaves in the 2001 UEFA Cup.
  • Liverpool have lost only one of their 14 games in the Europa League this season (W6 D7), that was against Villarreal in the semi-final first leg (1-0).
  • Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp has lost his last four finals: the 2013 Champions League with Borussia Dortmund (v Bayern Munich), the 2014 German Cup (v Bayern Munich) and 2015 (v Wolfsburg); the 2016 League Cup with Liverpool (v Manchester City).
  • Only once in the past 10 Europa League/Uefa Cup finals has the team who scored first not won the trophy (Dnipro against Sevilla in 2015).
  • Sevilla have won four of the last 10 Europa League/Uefa Cup finals. They could become the first ever team in the competition to win the trophy three years in a row.
  • Sevilla have reached each of the last three Europa League finals, the first side to ever reach the final of this competition in three consecutive years.
  • Spanish clubs have won seven of the last 12 editions of the Europa League/Uefa Cup (Sevilla 4, Atletico Madrid 2, Valencia 1).
  • Sevilla have won three of their eight European games against English opposition (D2 L3), including a 4-0 win over Middlesbrough in the 2006 UEFA Cup final.
  • Sevilla have won 13 of their last 18 games in the Europa League (D3 L2).
  • Kevin Gameiro has had a hand in nine (seven goals, two assists) of Sevilla's 14 goals in this season's Europa League, including eight in his last five games (six goals, two assists).

There’s a lot at stake for Spanish side Sevilla and English club Liverpool as they meet in Basel on Wednesday to claim a European victory this season.
Sevilla is also looking to win the trophy for the fifth time in 11 seasons, having also successfully defended their 2006 title in 2007. No team has won three straight Uefa Cups or Europa Leagues, and a fifth for Sevilla — all within just 10 years — would also extend the record it holds.

But Sevilla has not won outside of Spain all season -- a streak that began in Tbilisi, Georgia, back in August when Barcelona won a thrilling Uefa Super Cup 5-4 after extra time
