In the women's singles final at Italian Open, Serena Williams beats Madison Keys 7-6 (7/5), 6-3, which served as the 21-time Grand Slam champion's first title of the season.

After the final, Williams tipped her American compatriot to succeed her as world number one.

It was the first all-American WTA claycourt final since Serena Williams beat her older sister Venus Williams to win her maiden French Open title in 2002.

It was Serena Williams's 70th overall title, and 13th in clay.

Serena Williams thus became just the fifth woman to win singles 70 titles after Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, Steffi Graf and Margaret Court.
