Seniors were expected to be given some rest for the Zimbabwe tour, but not many expected that the ODI and T20I squad for the African Safari would include wholesale changes and Shardul Thakur will be given a Test call-up for the West Indies tour.
Among the many seniors rested for Zimbabwe are Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, R Ashwin, Ajinkya Rahane, Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja, while Harbhajan Singh has not been included in both the squad.
The 16-member squad for Zimbabwe includes five uncapped players, other than Karnataka batsman KL Rahul, who also gets a chance to make his limited-overs international debut after a good show in Test cricket and the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL).
Vidarbha batsman Faiz Fazal, offspinner Jayant Yadav from Haryana, Punjab batsman Mandeep Singh, Haryana leggie Yuzvendra Chahal and Karnataka batsman Karun Nair are the five uncapped players who have earned an India call-up after good domestic show.
M S Dhoni will continue to lead the ODI and T20I teams, as he will have a long rest after that with India playing mostly Test cricket until the start of next year.
