The bridge, which is between Khirkiya and Harda station, was apparently damaged following heavy rains leading to the tragedy
According to West Central Railway PRO Piyush Mathur, seven coaches of Kamayani Express and three coaches plus the engine of Janata Express were derailed late last night as the base material on the tracks got washed away.
Some bogies of both the trains have also fallen into the Machak river which is about 160 kilometers from Madhya Pradesh capital Bhopal.
At around 11.30 pm on Tuesday August 04,2015, passengers on the Mumbai-Varanasi Kamayani Express had finished dinner and many were sleeping when they suddenly felt a jolt. In the next few moments, there was chaos and screaming.
At least 27 people are dead and over 300 have been rescued after two trains derailed on tracks near the Machak river in Madhya Pradesh.
It had been raining heavily when the train was crossing a culvert near the river, around 160 km from capital Bhopal.
