16th Lok Sabha's first day first session Wednesday June 04,2014


The 16th Lok Sabha met for its first day of its first session on Wednesday with Prime Minister Narendra Modi assuring that he will 'fulfil the desires of the people of India'.


The House was adjourned for the day after an obituary reference to Rural Development Minister Gopinath Munde.

Ahead of the commencement of the session, former union minister Kamal Nath was sworn in as the Pro-tem Speaker of the Lok Sabha. He will hold the post till a new Speaker is sworn in on June 6,2014

"I have been in Parliament for three decades and it is our responsibility that debate takes place. We won't oppose for the sake of it, we will be working as a constructive opposition to the government," Kamal Nath said


Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who attended his first ever Lok Sabha session on Wednesday, said, "The people of India have given a remarkable mandate and sent us to the 16th Lok Sabha. I assure the people of India that I will fulfil all the desires of the people."

The Lok Sabha then observed a 2-minute silence to pay homage to Gopinath Munde and was adjourned for the day

16th Lok Sabha has as many as 315 members who are making their debut
BJP won 282 seats and it is the first time in 3 decades that a political party has secured a comfortable majority on its own
Indian National Congress(INC)was reduced to its lowest-ever tally in the Lok Sabha -44 Seats

Note

  • On June 6,2014 a new Speaker will be elected by the House
  • On June 9,2014 President Mukherjee will address the joint sitting of both Houses of Parliament, laying down the roadmap of the new government. 
  • The discussion on the Motion of Thanks will take place on June 10 and 11 before the session is adjourned sine die.
