Be it for football or cricket, the passion of the fans is unmatched, and that was on display for the second time in three years as people thronged to the Eden Gardens to celebrate Kolkata Knight Riders' Indian Premier League victory on Tuesday June 03,2014
Thousands thronged the stadium from early in the morning and the authorities opened the gates at 11am to enable the KKR supporters to enter well ahead of the scheduled start of the programme at 1pm.
But the programme was delayed as Shah Rukh Khan, and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee arrived late.
In the meantime, the entire stadium reverberated with popular numbers from SRK-starrer flicks like 'Aaj Ki Raat' from Don, 'Chance Pe Dance' from Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and KKR's official team anthem 'Korbo Lorbo Jeetbo Re'.
Legendary singer Usha Uthup, along with Aneek Dhar and popular Bengali band Bhoomi's lead vocalist Soumitra Roy performed live on a makeshift podium.
Taking a cue from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's hugely popular campaign slogan 'Ab Ki Baar...', Uthup sang a new theme song 'Ab ki baar KKR… Baar baar KKR… Baar baar chhakka maar'.
There were also a host of Bengali film and TV industry celebrities on the dais to celebrate the event.
Once the team arrived in open-top SUVs, the crowd erupted.
"Thank you very much for the love and support to KKR. The way you all have supported us is incredible. And for that I want to thank you all," Khan said while bowing down before the jam-packed gallery.
He also danced with members of the team and his entourage, and exchanged sweets with the CM.
Thanking the Chief Minister for all the arrangements, he travelled around the field with KKR members in tow and waved to the crowd.
It wasn't all rosy outside Eden as a huge unruly crowd came to witness the Kolkata Knight Riders' celebrations on Tuesday June 03,2014
Free entry passes were distributed by the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) through its own network of clubs and the Kolkata Police.
But the crowd went berserk as police stopped them from entering the stadium. Many who came with valid passes were held outside the gates
The situation then went out of control and the police had to resort to a baton charge to quell the irate gathering.
Many fans got injured due to the lathicharge as the Mounted Police and Rapid Action Force (RAF) were called in to bring the situation under control.
"People came like a tsunami. The gathering went well beyond the capacity of the stadium which was over 60,000. There is no more space at all inside.
"The police cannot allow them as there might be accidents if such a huge crowd enters Eden Gardens. And we also cannot ask them to go," Sports Minister Madan Mitra said.
A stampede-like situation erupted outside the stadium. People also broke barricades, running wildly inside the venue. The event also caused traffic gridlocks at peak hours.
