According to a Delhi Traffic Police
official, four people died in road accidents in Delhi daily (on an
average) this year. The traffic police have also short-listed the most
dangerous stretches in the Capital.
In South Delhi - AIIMS to Moti Bagh, Sarai Kale Khan and NH-8 are the most dangerous. Similarly, in Lutyens' zone, Mathura Road and the India Gate roundabout have been listed. Rohtak Road, Delhi Cantt area and GT Road have also been identified as dangerous stretches.
Areas such as Shalimar Bagh, Pitampura, Najafgarh road, Rajokari flyover, Ali Village, Laxmi Nagar T-point and Mehrauli- Badarpur Road have been added after a recent survey.
About 7,000 accidents are reported in the Capital on an average every year. Nearly 1,800-1,900 deaths occurred due to these accidents on Delhi's deadly stretches.
Last year, the total deaths reported were 1,832. According to senior officials, Delhi roads become more dangerous during the night. From 11pm till 7am, there are no traffic policemen on duty on the roads.
This year till May 31, 325 people lost their lives during night hours. During the day, 332 were killed.
"During night, there are no traffic cops to regulate traffic and issue challans. Also, most of the red-lights convert into blinkers. These are the most common reasons for fatal accidents. The Delhi Traffic Police have no data for the violations after 12 till 6am. This was the case with Munde's accident
