Arjen Robben gave Louis van Gaal's side the lead with his third goal of the tournament, running unopposed through the Socceroos' defence before driving the ball into the bottom corner.
Australia hit back just a minute later when talisman Tim Cahill scored a stunning volley and they took the lead nine minutes into the second half through Mile Jedinak's coolly-taken penalty.
Robin van Persie pulled the Dutch level shortly afterwards, smashing the ball into the roof of the net after beating a poorly executed offside trap.
Substitute Memphis Depay completed the comeback on 68 minutes when his long-range effort caught out Australia goalkeeper Matthew Ryan.
