BJP's PM candidate Narendra Modi addresses the 'Vijay Sankalp' rally in Gorakhpur,Uttar Pradesh Thursday Jan 23,2014

BJP's PM candidate Narendra Modi addressing a massive BJP rally in UP's Gorakhpur said, "In Benaras (Varanasi), Netaji has said Modi does not have what it takes to make another Gujarat out of UP. Do you know what making another Gujarat is? Gujarat means electricity 24 hours a day, 365 days a year."

"Netaji," Modi said, repeatedly using the name Mulayam Singh Yadav's party men use to address him,  "you can't make a Gujarat. That needs a chhappan inch ki chhati (56-inch chest)."

"If UP became Gujarat, then the people of Gujarat would come to UP looking for work, not the other way round. But you can't do it Netaji," the BJP's prime ministerial candidate said.

Highlights of Narendra Modi's Speech

  • I greet all the leaders of Uttar Pradesh and all the BJP dignitaries present here.
  • In this cold and that too in far-flung areas, a rally can attract so many people. The wind is blowing in a particular direction.
  • Your voice can be heard in the streets of Benaras (Varanasi) also.
  • This vision affirms that Indian will be Congress free soon.
  • I want to honour the youth of Uttar Pradesh. On 15 December, on the anniversary of Sardar Vallabhai Patel, there was a Unity run across the country.
  • I am pleased to say that in every corner of Uttar Pradesh, people ran in his memory. And this became a world record.
  • 50 lakh people ran across the country for a single cause.
  • The biggest statue will be built in India and it will be twice the size of Statue of Liberty in United States.
  • Farmers across the country have contributed iron from unused tools for the statue.
  • Wherever I look, I can see people, Janta janardan ke darshan ishwar darshan ke barabar hote hain.
  • In our country, recently elections took place in 5 states and BJP won in 4 of those states.
  • People do not consider Dalits, tribals and marginalised people as important. They are important only for vote banks.
  • In the four states where BJP has been victorious, we won by a huge margin.
  • In Rajasthan there are 34 seats reserved for SC communities. How many Congress won- not even 1.
  • There are 10 seats for SC communities in Chhattisgarh and Congress won only 1 seat.
  • The Dalits, tribals and marginalised people have confidence in BJP now.
  • Congress party speaks about the poor but they remember the poor only when elections are near.
  • In so many years, they spoke so much about the poor but then there is no change in the condition of the poor.
  • There is no change in the past 60 years. Our country is not like that.
  • I have found the answer to this. The future of Congress is in keeping the poor people poor.
  • They do not have the confidence to tolerate a tea seller.
  • Congress is exploiting our poverty.
  • Will you tolerate the insult to the poor?
  • Will you tolerate the party that makes a vote bank of the poor?
  • This is not a subject of a tea seller anymore.
  • Can you get food in 12 or 5 rupees? If this is not joke on the poor, than what is?
  • It is the poor who suffer and die and the government in UP and Delhi are not interested in fighting against poverty.
  • Which youngster wants to travel miles to Gujarat and leave his land and elderly parents?
  • If he got a daily living in his own city or village, they would not have to leave Uttar Pradesh.
  • Uttar Pradesh has been given so many gifts by God. In 10 years, UP can outshine any other state.
  • In Benaras (Varanasi), I was challenged by Mulayam and Akhilesh Yadav. Nowadays wherever i go the father and son follow me.
  • Today they said that Modiji cannot make UP into Gujarat.
  • Netaji, do you know the meaning of making Gujarat? 24x7 electricity in every single village. You are correct Netaji, you cannot make Gujarat. For this a 56-inch chest is required.
  • For the last 10 years, Gujarat has progressed and is still progressing. You cannot do this.
  • If you make UP into a Gujarat, the people of Gujarat will want to move to Uttar Pradesh.
  • You are unable to give respect to the women nor can you provide development.
  • If we have to remove poverty from the country, Uttar Pradesh can alone remove it.
  • We have animals, men, food and water, why do we need to get milk from outside?
  • Can we not get an Amul Diary here?
  • In our country, agriculture need to be strengthened. Farmers have to stand in a line to get fertiliser and the godowns holding the fertilisers are locked up.
  • The country needs progress, the youth need jobs and only BJP is walking the path to progress and only they can fulfill this.
  • The state that cannot run school exams on time, cannot run godowns and factories.
  • The youngsters lose years due to cancellation of exams. They just do not want to remove these problems.
  • We need to divide agriculture into 3 parts: traditional agriculture, animal husbandry, tree growing.
  • We need the right thinking, direction and leadership for this.
  • The present government spends all their time in small matters.
  • This country is not poor. Our country is rich and the people can become rich too. And we have to make the decision in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
  • Parents worry whenever their child leaves them to work outside.
  • You have chosen leaders for the past 60 years. I am here to just ask you for 60 months. Just give me 60 months. You have chosen leaders before, chose a servant now.
  • To fulfill your dreams, we will give our lives.
  • Today is the birthday of Subhas Chandra Bose. He said, you give me blood, I will give you freedom. I am asking you to give me 60 months and I will give you happy and peaceful lives.
  • We want to compete with the world and for this I need your support.
  • You people have won me over and I promise that I will return this love in multifold

Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Mulayam Singh Yadav  took a dig at Narendra Modi over his remarks that BJP will turn Uttar Pradesh into a Gujarat, reminding the BJP's prime ministerial nominee that "atrocities and massacres" were carried out in the state ruled by him.

"A rally is on in Gorakhpur where the chief guest is the BJP's prime ministerial candidate. They say, they'll create a Gujarat (here). But please think again, you will not be in a position to do a Gujarat. You'll do a Gujarat, commit atrocities and massacres. Because this is what you have done there," he said addressing a rally in Varanasi.

Comparing the performance of the Gujarat government with that of UP, headed by his son Akhilesh, Yadav asked the assembled crowd to find out whether the Gujarat government had given unemployment allowances, waived loans of farmers or given special facilities to women.

Mulayam Singh Yadav is prominent among Narendra Modi's many critics who accuse him of not doing enough the prevent the communal riots that lacerated Gujarat in 2002, killing hundreds of people, mostly Muslims
