2013 Ramon Magsaysay Award


Afghanistan’s first and only female Governor and a humanitarian worker from Myanmar are among this year’s recipients of the Ramon Magsaysay award

The Ramon Magsaysay Awards announced on Wednesday July 23,2013 honour 3 individuals and 2
organisations for changing their societies for the better

Habiba Sarabi(Afghanistan) was honoured for helping build a functioning local government and pushing for education and women’s rights in Afghanistan’s Bamyan province despite discrimination and poverty


Lahpai Seng Raw(Myanmar) helps rehabilitate damaged communities amid armed conflict in Myanmar



Ramon Magsaysay Award is an annual award established in 1957 by the trustees of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund based in New York City with the concurrence of the Philippine government to perpetuate former Philippine President Ramon Magsasay's example of integrity in government, courageous service to the people, and pragmatic idealism within a democratic society and is is often considered Asia's Nobel Prize.


The awards are given in 6 categories, five of which were discontinued starting 2009 to Asian Individuals and Organizations for achieving excellence in -

  • Government Service(1958 - 2008)
  • Public Service(1958 - 2008)
  • Community Leadership(1958 - 2008)
  • Journalism, Literature and Creative Communication Arts(1958 - 2008)
  • Peace and International Understanding(1958 - 2008)
  • Emergent Leadership(Since 2001)
  • Uncategorized(Since 2009)

The Awardees will receive a certificate, a medallion and a cash prize of $50000



Note
  • In 2005, Habiba Sarabi was appointed as Governor of Bamyan Province by President Hamid Karzai  which made her the first Afghan woman to become a governor of any province in the country
  • Habiba Sarabi previously served as Afghanistan's Minister of Women's Affairs as well as Minister of Culture & Education 
  • In 2008 Time Magazine included her in its list of Heroes of the Environment(2008) partly for her work in establishing the Band-e-Amir National Park of Afghanistan in Bamiyan
