The match was on March 12, 2006 at Johannesburg, where South Africa were playing Australia in the final match of a 5-match series which was level at 2-2.

Australia batted first and piled up a massive 434/4 in 50 overs, with captain Ricky Ponting playing one of the finest ODI knocks ever, scoring 164 runs off 105 balls
South Africa started miserably, losing opener Boeta Dippenear early. But Graeme Smith and Herschelle Gibbs launched a breathtaking counter-attack.Graeme Smith was eventually dismissed for a 55-ball 90 Runs, while Gibbs bettered Ponting’s effort with a 111-ball 175 Runs.



There was a mini collapse, but Mark Boucher had a cool enough head to hit a memorable and quickfire 50 off just 43 balls, hitting Brett Lee for a four as winning runs for the side.
South Africa ended the ODI scoring 438/9 to win the match

Ponting became the first Australian captain to lose three Ashes series, and on the back of the 3-1 home series loss to England in 2010-11 pressure was on him to step down as captain.

Ricky Ponting has resigned as Australia captain but wants to carry on playing for the team.
The 36-year-old made the announcement in Sydney after arriving home following his side's World Cup quarter-final defeat by co-hosts India.
"I have decided to stand down as captain of the Test and one-day teams as of now," he told a news conference.
Ricky Ponting took over the one-day captaincy in 2002 and the Test captaincy from Steve Waugh in 2004 as Australia's 42nd Test Cricket Captain and statistically has been Australia's most successful skipper.

Under his leadership, Australia won -
48 out 77 Tests, 16 of them in a row between December 2005 and January 2008, and
163 out of 227 one-day internationals, including the 2003 and 2007 World Cups.

Michael Clarke,replace him as captain.


Test Cricket Retirement After a 17 Year Career(1995-2012)

Ricky Ponting(37) announced his Test retirement at a press conferenceon Thursday Nov 29,2012.
The third Test against South Africa at the WACA,Perth starting Friday Nov 30,2012 will be his last international game.

"I haven't been performing consistently over the last 12-18 months," he said. "I believe now is the right time.
"This is a decision not made by the selectors, it was made by me."
