Hurricane Sandy - Oct 22-29,2012


   Sandy developed from a tropical wave in the western Caribbean Sea  on Oct 22,2012 became a tropical depression, quickly strengthened, and was upgraded to a tropical storm  six hours later. Sandy moved slowly northward toward the Greater Antilles and gradually intensified.
On Oc 24,2012 Sandy was upgraded to a hurricane, shortly before making landfall in Jamaica.
Upon moving farther north, Sandy re-entered water and made its second landfall in Cuba during the early morning of Oct 25,2012 as a Category 2 hurricane.
During the late evening of October 25, Sandy weakened to Category 1 strength; in the early hours of October 26, it headed north through the Bahamas
 Sandy in Haiti Haiti was pelted by three days of constant rains due to Hurricane Sandy.The storm did not directly hit Haiti but it brought several days of drenching rains, causing rivers to overrun their bank.
Over 51 deaths were reported from Haiti as Hurricane Sandy crossed it.


As many as 30,000 people in Haiti alone were affected after the hurricane skirted the Caribbean last week. More than 20 inches (500mm) of rain fell over four days. 
Officials said as much as 70 per cent of crops were destroyed by the hurricane in some areas.  With hundreds of thousands of people still living in tents after the earthquake in 2010, Haiti was hardest hit by the storm


Sandy in Jamaica - Wednesday Oct 24,2012

At least one person was killed as Hurricane Sandy made landfall Wednesday in south-eastern Jamaica near Kingston with winds of up to 135 kilometres per hour.
Cleveland Scott, 74, died when a landslide caused a boulder to fall on his house in Bedward Garden near the capital, The Gleaner newspaper said
More than 1,000 people fled to emergency shelters across the Caribbean island nation, the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management told.




Sandy in Cuba -Thursday Oct 25,2012


Sandy, which weakened to a category 1 hurricane Thursday night, caused havoc in Cuba early in the day, killing 11 people in eastern Santiago and Guantanamo provinces as its howling winds and rain toppled houses and ripped off roofs. Authorities said it was Cuba’s deadliest storm since July 2005, when category 5 Hurricane Dennis killed 16 people and caused $2.4 billion in damage. 
Sandy crossed Cuba and reached the Bahamas as a category 2 hurricane.

Sandy pounds Bahamas - Friday Oct 26,2012

 

Hurricane Sandy raged through the Bahamas early Friday after leaving 21 people dead across the Caribbean, following a path that could see it blend with a winter storm and reach the U.S. East Coast as a super—storm next week.
Sandy knocked out power, flooded roads and cut off islands in the storm—hardened Bahamas as it swirled past Cat Island and Eleuthera.

Early Friday, the hurricane’s centre was about 25 kilometres east—southeast of Great Abaco Island in the Bahamas and 780 kilometres south—southeast of Charleston, S.C. Sand was moving northeast at 20 kmph with maximum sustained winds near 80 mph 130 kmph.

Hurricane Sandy spun away from the Bahamas late on Friday after causing 43 deaths across the Caribbean, churning northward toward the U.S. East Coast

Government officials in the Bahamas said the storm seemed to have inflicted the greatest damage on Cat Island, which took a direct hit, and Exuma, where there were reports of downed trees, power lines and damage to homes

 


Jamaica, Cuba and the Bahamas took direct hits from the Sandy storm, the majority of deaths and most extensive damage were in impoverished Haiti.

 Hurricane Sandy headed north from the Caribbean, where it left nearly 60 dead - to threaten the eastern US with sheets of rain, high winds and heavy snow as officials warned millions in coastal areas to get out of the way of the behemoth storm The National Hurricane Center in Miami said Sandy will continue moving parallel to the Southeast coast and approach the coast of the mid-Atlantic states by Oct 29,2012 Monday night.

Up and down the US East Coast and far inland, officials urged residents and businesses to prepare in big ways and little. The Virginia National Guard was authorised to call up to 500 troops to active duty for debris removal and road-clearing, while homeowners stacked sandbags at their front doors in coastal towns.     Forecasters say Sandy is a rare, hybrid "super storm" created by an Arctic jet stream wrapping itself around a tropical storm, possibly causing up to 30cm of rain

Sandy could be the biggest storm to hit the US mainland when it comes ashore on Monday night, bringing strong winds and dangerous flooding to the East Coast .The storm could have a brutal impact on major cities in the target zone such as Boston, New York, Washington, Baltimore and Philadelphia.
 New York City's subway, bus and train service was suspended on Sunday evening, which could bring the country's financial centre to a virtual standstill.

Over 6000 flights were cancelled across the country’s northeast regions and 370,000 people were evacuated from New York city.

 UN headquarters here would remain closed on Monday and possibly Tuesday due to the storm. All meeting at the UN were cancelled. The Nasdaq exchange also announced it would be closed on Monday.

The city set up 76 evacuation shelters in public schools for people from low-lying areas of Coney Island, Manhattan Beach and other areas along the East River in Brooklyn in Manhattan.

The city’s public schools, which cater to 1.1 million schoolchildren, were also ordered closed for Monday and the Coast Guard closed the New York Harbour.

NewYork city’s 468 subway stations, buses, rails, were also closed as officials advised people not to venture out. Utility companies warned that the hurricane could lead to power outages across several areas leaving people without electricity and heat for anywhere between 5-7 days.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie also authorised closure of all State Offices for Monday, due to the impending impact of Hurricane Sandy and dangerous weather conditions.

Governors from North Carolina to Connecticut declared states of emergency and Delaware ordered mandatory evacuations for coastal communities as Hurricane Sandy lumbered north from the Caribbean where it left nearly 60 dead to threaten the eastern U.S. with sheets of rain, high winds and heavy snow.

President Barack Obama said on Sunday that Sandy was a "serious and big storm" and called on East Coast residents to heed the orders of state and local officials to protect themselves from its onslaught.



Hurricane Sandy grounds thousands of flights 

Hurricane Sandy grounded thousands of flights in the U.S. northeast on Monday and upended travel plans across the globe, stranding passengers from Hong Kong to Europe.

American Airlines, JetBlue and Delta planned to cancel all flights into and out of three area airports in New York, the nation’s busiest airspace. According to the flight-tracking service FlightAware, nearly 7,500 flights had been cancelled for Sunday and Monday. Both Philadelphia International Airport and Newark International Airport, a hub for United Airlines, each had more than 1,200 cancellations for the two days.

Sandy slams into Atlantic coast 

 

 


 

 

 

Superstorm Sandy slammed into the New Jersey coastline and hurled a record-breaking 4-metre surge of seawater at New York City on Monday, roaring ashore after washing away part of the Atlantic City boardwalk and putting the presidential campaign on hold. 
At least 10 deaths were blamed on the storm. The 10 deaths were in New Jersey, New York, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Connecticut.
Sandy knocked out power to at least 3.1 million people, and New York’s main utility said large sections of Manhattan had been plunged into darkness by the storm, with 250,000 customers without power as water pressed into the island from three sides. 
The National Hurricane Centre announced at 8 p.m. that Sandy had come ashore near Atlantic City. It smacked the boarded-up big cities of the Northeast corridor, from Washington and Baltimore to Philadelphia, New York and Boston, with stinging rain and gusts of more than 85 mph (135 kph). The sea surged a record of nearly 4 metre at the foot of Manhattan, flooding the financial district and subway tunnels.

President Obama and Republican Governor Chris Christie Survey Storm Damage in New Jersey - Wednesday Oct 31,2012

   

President Barack Obama climbed into his Marine One helicopter with New Jersey's Republican governor Chris Christie to tour the devastated Jersey Shore, where Sandy made landfall.

It is to be noted that President Barack Obama skipped campaign events and visit victims of superstorm Sandy in New Jersey thereby emphasizing his incumbent’s role for a third straight day.

 

 

 


 

Large areas of New Jersey were devastated by flooding and parts of New York City were at a virtual standstill after the storm hit, bringing with it a record 4-metre-plus tidal surge.
At least 45 people were confirmed to have been killed by the storm, which had earlier killed more than 60 in the Caribbean.
