Remembering Lala Amarnath (Sep 11,1911 - Aug 05,2000)on his birth anniversay Wednesday Sep 11,2019

On this day in 1911, legendary Indian cricketer Lala Amarnath was born. His influence on Indian cricket went beyond the runs he made and the records he set, going on to become an administrator, selector, manager and even a broadcaster.

Amarnath became the first Indian to score a Test century on debut, when India played its first ever Test match on home soil in Bombay in 1933 against England. It was also under Amarnath’s captaincy in 1952 that India won its first ever Test series: A 2-1 win against Pakistan, sealing it in Delhi.

Overall, Amarnath played 24 Tests and scored 878 runs at an average of 24.3 and a highest score of 118. He also took 45 wickets. Amarnath’s legacy lived through his three sons, who all became first-class cricketers while two of them also went on to represent India in Tests.
