Third Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon Award Announced Wednesday Nov 02,2016

The winners of the third Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon Award were announced in a ceremony in Benin on Wednesday Nov 02,2016, three years after the murder of the two French journalists in Mali.

 

Veteran reporter Dupont and technician Verlon were abducted and assassinated by Islamist militants near the northern Malian city of Kidal on November 2, 2013 while reporting for Radio France Internationale(RFI)

The France Médias Monde group, which includes RFI and FRANCE 24, set up the award in memory of the slain journalists’ lifelong commitment to Africa.

This year the prize went to Benin journalists Cécile Goudou and Didier Guedou, who were selected among a pool of 220 nominees from French-speaking African countries.

Goudou, a 31-year-old journalist at Benin’s state radio, was rewarded for her work on women who oppose the compulsory practice of marrying widows to the brothers of their deceased husbands.
Guedou, a 22-year-old sound technician at the Eden TV/Diaspora FM group, won the distinction for his contribution to a report on slavery and its aftermath.

Both will travel to Paris next year to train with RFI, in partnership with the French capital's journalism schools.
