Mehbooba Mufti(56)took oath as the 13th chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir


Governor N.N. Vohra administered oath of office. 22 ministers, including BJP's Nirmal Singh, also took oath. 56-year-old Mehbooba, who took oath in Urdu, is the 13th chief minister of the state. Mufti succeeds her father Mufti Mohammad Saeed who died in January 2016

Nirmal Singh would be the deputy chief minister, the same post he held in the previous government headed by Sayeed.

16 Cabinet rank minister who took oath are Abdul Rehman Bhat Veeri, Ghulam Nabi Lone, Abdul Haq Khan, Syed Basharat Bukhari, Haseeb A. Drabu, Chauhary Zulfikar Ali, Syed Naeem Akhtar and Molvi Imran Raza Ansari from PDP and BJP’s Nirmal Singh, Chander Prakash, Bali Bhagat, Chaudhary Lal Singh, Sajad Gani Lone, Shayam Lal Chaudhary and Abdul Gani Kohli.

Other ministers of state are Asiya Naqash, Syed Farooq Ahmed Andrabi and Zahoor Ahmed Mir from PDP and Sunil Kumar Sharma, Priya Sethi and Ajay Nanda from BJP.

PDP’s Syed Altaf Bukhari and Javed Mustafa Mir, who served as cabinet ministers in the previous PDP-BJP government, have been dropped from the list for their ‘dissident’ activities and ‘poor performance’.

There is likely to be no change in the portfolios worked out by the two parties in 2015. Under the agreement, portfolios like home, finance, revenue, law and justice and education will remain with the PDP while BJP will keep health, urban development, power, commerce and industries and public health engineering.

Union ministers Venkaiah Naidu and Jitdendra Singh were present for the oath ceremony, which was also attended by former chief ministers Farooq Abdullah and his son Omar Abdullah. Mufti’s mother Gulshan Ara Nazir, daughters Iltija and Irtiqa and siblings Tassaduq Sayeed, Mahmooda Sayeed and Rubaiya Sayeed were also present.

Mehbooba Mufti,who is PDP Lok Sabha MP from Anantnag seat, has six months in which she will have to contest election and win as an MLA or MLC.

About BJP's Nirmal Singh


Nirmal Singh(60) has contested several Lok Sabha and state assembly elections over the past 25 years but had to wait till 2014 for his maiden victory.

Nirmal Singh won his first Assembly election last year from Billawar constituency in Kathua district by defeating sitting Congress MLA Manohar Lal Sharma by a margin of nearly 18,000 votes.

Nirmal Singh's father was part of the security cordon of the then Maharaja of the state.

A professor of history at Jammu University, Mr Singh hails from Karanwara-Sabar area of Basohli tehsil in Kathua.

He did his PhD in history from Jammu University in 1988 and was serving as a professor of history in the varsity before his election to the assembly.
