All schools in Odisha shut till April 26 ,2016 due to severe heat wave, water crisis

The Odisha government Tuesday April 19,2016 asked all schools in the state to remain close till April 26 due to the intense heat and water crisis.

Earlier, the government had announced closure of schools till April 20 in view of the prevailing heat wave.

Death toll due to sunstroke and other related incidents has touched 45 in the state. On Monday, the weather department recorded temperature above 40 degrees Celsius from 16 places.

Western Odisha has been reeling under severe heat wave and water crisis as several towns recorded temperatures of over 43 degrees Celsius. Sonepur registered highest temperature of 46 degrees Celsius followed by Sundargarh (45 degrees Celsius) and Jharsuguda (44.4 degrees Celsius).

Bhubaneswar met department director Sarat Chandra Sahu said the mercury is set to rise further from April 22,2016

"There is a marginal drop in temperature in coastal districts of Odisha due to the wind flow from south-east direction as well as the wind speed which is around 45 kmph. Though there will be a slight dip in temperature in interior Odisha, the model indicator suggests the temperature will gradually rise in next 48 hours in interior and coastal Odisha with severe heat wave condition in the next three days from April 21," Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre director Sarat Chandra Sahu said.
However, the weather department has predicted thunderstorms in parts of northern and interior parts of the state.

"If this system intensifies, there is possibility of rainfall in Balasore, Bhadrak, Khurda and Cuttack districts in coastal Odisha. But there would be light rainfall as there is not enough moisture in the upper atmosphere," Sahu added.
