Johanna Konta became Britain's first female
grand slam quarter-finalist since 1984 after she edged out Ekaterina
Makarova(Russia) in a nail-biting contest at the Australian Open.
It is 32 years since Jo Durie reached the last eight at Wimbledon but
Konta ended the wait for the next quarter-finalist as she came from
behind to beat Makarova 4-6, 6-4, 8-6 on Margaret Court Arena.
Johanna Konta, world number 47, who has been on a superb run of form since reaching
the last 16 of the US Open in 2015, knocked Venus Williams out in the
first round before beating Saisai Zheng, Denisa Allertova and now
Makarova to continue her rise in the women's game.
Johanna Konta will now face either Madison Keys, the American
15th seed, or Chinese qualifier Shuai Zhang for a place in the
semi-finals
