60,000 people pack into Wembley Stadium to watch Indian PM Modi make historic speech
Tens of thousands of people were earlier seen arriving at Wembley Stadium as they prepared to welcome India's prime minister when he gives a speech in front of a packed crowd
Some 60,000
supporters waving scarves, flags and banners descended on the home of
England football tonight to welcome Narendra Modi as he continues his
three-day visit to the UK - the first by an Indian prime minister for a
decade.
Usually
reserved for rockstars and sporting icons, it was the unlikely presence
of Mr Modi - a controversial figure in his home country - that held the
stadium's attention as he hailed India's 'special relationship' with
the UK.
A cheer erupted as David Cameron embraced Mr Modi on stage before the Indian leader delivered his impassioned speech in Hindi.
The
extravaganza in North London kicked off with a number of colourful
performances from Indian and British dancers and muscians, who were
greeted backstage by the Camerons and Mr Modi.
Samantha Cameron dazzled in a patterned sari as she joined her husband and prime minister Modi to greet performers backstage
