Stats and Trivia
  • India have only lost one home Tess series in the last 11 years, to England in 2012. Between November 2004 and November 2015, they played 17 series at home, winning 12 and drawing five. They have not had any home Tests for the last two years.
  • South Africa's unbeaten nine-year streak on the road has included 13 series in all 10 Test countries other than their own where Test cricket is hosted, including Pakistan. Of those, there are only two places where South Africa have not won, but drawn series: India and the UAE, both twice.
India face South Africa in the third and penultimate Test in Nagpur from November 25,2015

In the first Test @ Mohali India secured 108-run victory and a 1-0 lead with more than two days to spare.
In the Second Test @ Benglauru India dismissed the South Africans for 214 on the opening day of the second Test that, however, is best remembered for four days of washout that followed

Both in Mohali and Bangalore,Ravichandran Ashwin, the leader of the country's spin attack, was well supported by Jadeja. The spin twins worked in tandem to torment the visitors and further exposed their already known limitations of handling spin.

Ravichandran Ashwin, who has pocketed 12 wickets in the series so far, has been one of India's best match-winners at home in recent times. Ever since he made his debut in 2011, the offie has made an impact in every home series.
In the 30 Tests he has played yet in his career, Ashwin has so far won three Man-of-the-Match awards and four Man of the Series: West Indies in India (2011/12) - 22 wickets, New Zealand in India (2012) - 18 wickets, Border Gavaskar Trophy (2013) - 29 wickets, India in Sri Lanka (2015) - 21 wickets

Day Two Thursday Nov 26,2015 in numbers

  • India have never bowled a side out for fewer than the 82 made by Sri Lanka at Chandigarh in 1990
  • Only once before have 20 wickets fallen in a day in India Vs Australia in Mumbai in 2004
  • South Africa's 79 was their lowest total since they made 72 against England in Cape Town in 1957
  • South Africa's first innings lasted 33.1 overs, their third shortest innings since returning to Test cricket in 1992
  • Ashwin is only the second spinner to bowl unchanged through a completed innings, following England's Monty Panesar against India at Mumbai in 2012
  • Never before have 32 wickets in the first two days of a Test in India
  • South Africa, chasing 310 runs, were 32 for two at stumps on the second day, their nine-year unbeaten record on the road under serious threat. The Proteas need a further 278 for a win with eight second innings wickets in hand
 Day Three Friday Nov 27,2015

For South Africa the target of 310 proved too steep a mountain to climb on a challenging track. In the end, the Nagpur Test finished as another three-day affair, with another five-for from R Ashwin taking India to a 124-run win and in the process end a 10-year wait to beat South Africa in a Test series.

Faf du Plessis and Hashim Amla forged a dogged resistance, but scoring runs was always a task as the duo's stand clearly showed - 72 runs in 46.2 overs.

And once Amit Mishra removed both the set batsmen for 39 each, it was a backward counting to the end of South Africa's nine-year unbeaten streak in away Test series.

In the end, South Africa was sent packing for 185 in 89.5 overs in the second innings to wrap up the match 52 minutes after the tea session, which meant they are yet to touch the 200 mark in the series, which included the embarrassing 79 all out in the first innings at Nagpur

For the first time since 2006, South Africa lost two Tests in an away series

India needed eight wickets for win on the third day, and they achieved the task in style

India have won 8 of their last 9 home Tests - the other being the rain hit drawn 2nd Test Match @ Bengaluru

All 8 of those India victories - 4-0 against Australia, 2-0 against West Indies and the two wins in this series - have come inside three days

It was also Virat Kohli's first home Test series win as skipper

Virat Kohli, who achieved his first home series win as Test captain, credited Ashwin for the win. "It is very pleasing to beat a tough team like South Africa. We have been positive throughout the entire series. Ashwin is a world class spinner, probably the best in the world. He is the reason why we have been winning consistently,"

The star of the show was Ashwin, who scripted his 15th five-wicket haul to help India win the match and the series

Ravichandran Ashwin completed his 4th 10—wicket haul in a match in his 31st Test.

Ravichandran Ashwin displayed his magic yet again to record a career-best figures of 7/66  and Ravichandran Ashwin had a superb match haul of 12 for 98

Ravichandran Ashwin’s second innings victims included three left— handers — the opening duo of Dean Elgar, Stiaan van Zyl and Jean—Paul Duminy — apart from the prize wicket of AB de Villiers, the visitors’ most successful batsman on this visit.
He fittingly took the last wicket, by clean bowling last man Morne Morkel through the gate in his final devastating spell of 4 for 16 in 19 ball

A total of 33 of the 40 wickets in the Test, including all 20 South African wickets, fell to spinners, with man of the match Ashwin taking 12 in the game
