On the final day of the 21st Congress, the party will choose the new Central Committee, which will then elect a new politburo and general secretary
Party's politburo met on Saturday night and finalised the names to the new Central Committee (CC). The CC meeting, which began at 9 a.m., will discuss the names.
At the end of CPM’s six-day party congress, S Ramachandra Pillai has withdrawn from contesting for the party general secretary post clearing the road for Sitaram Yechury.
Sources said that the outgoing general secretary Prakash Karat advised Pillai to withdraw from the contest

Since its inception in 1964, the party has never had an election for the post, with the general secretary always being picked through consensus. The party constitution, however, does provide for a secret ballot in case of a contest.
