A day after Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi asked Prime Minister
Manmohan Singh to grant minority status to Jain community, the Union
Cabinet on Monday Jan 20,2014 approved a plan for the notification of Jains as a
minority community at the national level.
The Cabinet approved the inclusion of Jains in the list of notified minority communities under Section 2(c) of the National Commission for Minorities Act, 1992 pending the outcome of court cases in addition to the five communities already notified as minorities under Section 2(c) of the National Commission for Minorities Act, 1992
Rahul Gandhi had on Sunday Jan 19,2014 spoken to PM after a delegation of Jain leaders led by Union Minister Pradeep Jain met him yesterday to seek his support for the same.

AICC had said in a release that Jain Samaj leaders had spoken to Rahul about their long-pending demand for minority status for the community and urged him to support their cause. "Rahul recognised the role played by the Jain community in the social, cultural and economic development of the country. He assured the delegation that he would do his utmost to ensure fair and equitable recognition and representation for the Jain community," the release said.
Presently,Jains enjoy minority status in some states like -
At Present,Under Section 2 (c) of National Commission for Minorities (NCM) Act, 1992, five religious communities are declared Minority Communities through a government notification issued in October 1993 -
