The Rajya Sabha has 250 members; 12 of them are nominated by the President and the rest are representatives of the states and union territories and are elected by members of the legislative assemblies for six year terms.
Unlike the Lok Sabha, the upper house is never dissolved. Elections are held to one-third of its seats every second year.
The date for Rajya Sabha polls have been confirmed by the Election Commission of India on Monday Jan 20,2014.
The elections will be held for the seats falling vacant between April 2-14 ,2014
55 seats in 16 States of India -Maharastra, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, West
Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Assam,Bihar, Chattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana,
Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, Rajasthan and
Meghalaya are lying vacant.
Besides Maharashtra(7 seats) the elections will be held in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh (six seats each), West Bengal and Bihar (five each), Odisha and Gujarat (four each), Assam, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan (three each).
The other states to see polling are Chhattisgarh, Haryana and Jharkhand (two seats each) and Himachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Manipur (one seat each).

Announcing
the Rajya Sabha poll schedule on Monday, the Election Commission said
that notification would be issued on January 21. The last date for
filing of nominations is January 28 while that for withdrawal is January
