The State government announced new fares for autorickshaws on Sunday Aug 25,2013
The fare for the first 1.8 kilometres is Rs. 25 and Rs.12 for every
additional kilometre
The government has also fixed Rs. 3.50 as waiting charges for five minutes and Rs. 42 for an hour
The fares will come into effect from today and would be applicable to 71,470 vehicles in Chennai.
Besides, the State government has also announced Rs. 80 crore for fixing
meters with GPS, electronic printer and panic buttons. It will be
provided free of cost to auto rickshaw drivers
The Chennai Traffic police have also started awareness campaign on the new fares for drivers and commuters

Over the next few months, when commuters in the city get into an
autorickshaw, not only will they be given a revised tariff card, they
will also be able to see the a copy of the vehicle’s permit, the
driver’s photograph and his badge number
the tariff card will enable commuters to check that the fare corresponds
to the distance they have travelled
the permit number and driver’s
name will enable them to lodge a complaint in case of malpractices
all complaints can be called in to the helplines set up
