Good boxers
are known for their versatility, no matter what the occasion is. Boxing
fans over the last decade have seen Vijender’s defensive avatar in the
ring.
Be
it the 2008 Olympics, 2009 World Championships or the 2010 Asian Games,
he won his medal bouts with counter-attacks and good footwork.
As
the Bhiwani boy prepared for his professional debut against British
boxer Sonny Whiting at the Manchester Arena on Saturday, many felt a
counter-attacking approach will be huge disadvantage for the Indian
star.
But like a
seasoned boxer, Vijender changed his approach from the word go in
Saturday’s bout, surprising not just his critics, but Whiting as well.
By the time his opponent knew what was happening, Vijender had won his maiden bout.
It
was no routine victory. Against Whiting, who had two wins on the pro
circuit including a knockout, Vijender secured a knockout as the referee
stopped the contest in the third of the four rounds.
