The inaugural 'janta darbar' or public hearing called by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today Saturday Jan 11,2014 could not go as planned following chaos at Delhi Secretariat where hundreds had turned up hoping to get an audience with their 'aam aadmi' Chief Minister.
Security personnel at the sprawling complex in central Delhi were forced to take Arvind Kejriwal away from the site. However, his colleagues in the Cabinet - Rakhi Birla, Somnath Bharti and Saurabh Bhardwaj - are still there, collecting the application letters brought by the people.
Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal apologised for his administration's mishandling of the event. "There could have been stampede had I not left 'janta darbar'. Better arrangement is needed next time ''
The opening of the VIP gates of the Secretariat for the aam aadmi or common man - a promise that the Aam Aadmi Party had made in its manifesto - resulted in the security forces outnumbered by people with a grievance to report to their government
All roads leading to the Secretariat were barricaded with only pedestrians allowed
On Thursday Jan 09,2014, Mr Kejriwal had announced that his entire cabinet will sit outside their offices at the Delhi Secretariat on Saturday every week and hear grievances from people and try to solve them. On weekdays, he said, one minister will hear grievances from the public.
"Public grievance is a major issue for any government. It is the duty of every government to resolve those grievances. Public grievance is just a symptom, the disease lies somewhere else," Mr Kejriwal had said. Grievances will be segregated into five categories depending upon their urgencies, he added
