A late winter storm dumped heavy snow on the midwestern United States on Tuesday, contributing to numerous highway crashes and flight cancellations as it moved east toward the Ohio Valley and the mid-Atlantic states.
Schools were closed in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois, where officials urged caution on slick roads.
Chicago's O'Hare airport had already seen six inches of snow.Washington DC is expected to see 3-8 inches of snow.
More than 1,000 flights were cut in and out of Chicago's O'Hare and Midway airports and 107 more were canceled in and out of Minneapolis-St.Paul International Airport.
The storm was expected to move eastward over the Ohio Valley and then the central Appalachians and mid-Atlantic states on Wednesday March 6,2013, hitting Washington with its biggest snowfall in possibly two years, the National Weather Service said
Governor Declares State of Emergency in Virginia
Gov. Bob McDonnell warned Virginians that the winter storm isn't over yet.
“The storm is not at all over, it has moved offshore and is very intense and heavy bands of snow that will be coming in,” McDonnell said in a news conference.
McDonnell had declared a state of emergency when heavy snow piled up across much of Virginia, particularly in western localities

Virginia Department of Transportation crews were "fully engaged" in clearing roads from the winter storm
