Elaben Bhatt, was awarded Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace -Monday Feb 18,2013


Ela Bhatt, the founder of Self Employed Women's Association (SEWA), was conferred the prize for 2011 at Rashtrapati Bhawan in presence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

Ela Bhatt founded Sewa in 1972 with 600 women. Under her leadership, it has grown an organization with 13 lakh members, playing a pioneering role in the empowerment of women.

The prize carries a citation and a cash award of Rs 25 lakh

President Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress President Sonia Gandhi along with Ela Bhatt,Founder of the Self-Employed Women's Association of India (SEWA) , during the 'Indira Gandhi Prize For Peace Award 2011', at Rastrapati Bhawan in New Delhi.
