TN chief minister J Jayalalithaa passed away late Monday night Dec 05,2016 after over two months of stay at the Apollo Hospital in Chennai
Early Tuesday morning Dec 06,2016, Tamil Nadu Governor C Vidyasagar Rao administered oath of office to O Panneerselvam, the state finance minister, who has now been sworn in as chief minister
Considered to be one of the trusted aides of Jayalalithaa, he was among the leaders who fell out of favour with her before the recent 2016 TN assembly elections.
Still, he did not suffer much damage unlike other senior leaders who were all either thrown out of party posts or forced to contest in tough seats in the elections to get defeated as Jayalalithaa wanted.
Popularly known as OPS, he held the post of CM two times earlier, in the absence of J Jayalalithaa in September 2001 when Jayalalithaa was barred by SCI from holding office and in September 2014 when Jayalalitha was convicted in the disproportionate assets case
