World Poetry Day is on 21 March, and was declared by UNESCO
(the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization)
in 1999
"By paying tribute to the men and women whose only instrument is free speech, who imagine and act, UNESCO recognizes in poetry its value as a symbol of the human spirit's creativity," Irina Bokova, director-general of UNESCO, said in a statement.
The purpose of the day is to promote the reading, writing, publishing and teaching of poetry throughout the world
