Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel inaugurates Rs 1100-crore “scooters-only” plant of Honda Motorcycle & Scooter Pvt Ltd at Vithalapur in Ahmedabad District Wednesday February 17,2016

Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel inaugurated a Rs 1100-crore “scooters-only” plant of Honda Motorcycle & Scooter Pvt Ltd at Vithalapur in Ahmedabad district on Wednesday February 17,2016
The plant, which would manufacture the company’s largest selling “Activa” and “Dio” models, is a “green” manufacturing facility that would effectively use natural light thus cutting down power bills by an estimated 21 %
“Apart from one-third of the total plant area of 250 acre being a dedicated green zone, this scooters-only plant of Honda will be using a lot of natural light and LED lighting which will help cut the power bills by as much as 21 %,” said V Sridhar, senior vice-president and director, Corporate Office Production, HMSI that built the plant in 13 months.
The technology-intensive facility located around 80 km from Ahmedabad will be consuming about seven mega watt of power to run operations.

It will also have an integrated zero liquid discharge facility like the one that exists in Karnataka.

“In Gujarat, about 40 per cent of the two-wheelers sold are scooters. Even after 15 years, the demand for Activa models has not gone down. We still have a back-order of 30,000 Activas and so we have decided launch a scooters-only facility,” Sridhar said.

The company, however, would not “divert” any of the existing two-wheeler capacity in other plants to the new facility in Gujarat that also has the “flexibility” to manufacture motorcycles as per the future demands of the market.

Providing direct employment to around 900 people, Honda’s fourth plant operations are scheduled in two phases.

The first production line that began operations Wednesday February 17,2016 will produce six lakh units annually.

And a second manufacturing line of an additional six lakh units that will become operational in the middle of 2016.

“The plant will provide employment to around 3,000 people. Around 900 will be direct jobs. The presence of locals (Gujaratis) in our plant is as high as 85 % on our manufacturing lines, while it is about 50 per cent in the management staff,” the official added.
