‘Greater Chennai Corporation’ - Tamil Ndu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa inaugurates

 

Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Friday January 29,2016 inaugurated ‘Greater Chennai Corporation’ comprising 42 additional local bodies in Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts. The extended areas of Chennai were added in 2011, and have come under the administration of the Chennai Corporation since then. 

 

Greater Chennai Corporation covering 24 Assembly constituencies and six Parliamentary constituencies, has emerged as the city with the third largest number of migrants from other States

New Delhi and Mumbai were the only two cities ahead of Greater Chennai Corporation in terms of number of residents from other parts of the country living there.

A government order renaming the Chennai Corporation as the Greater Chennai Corporation was actually issued in October 26, 2015 itself. The Chief Minister’s move to endorse the new nomenclature for the civic body is expected to give an impetus to infrastructure development in added areas using funding from international agencies such as World Bank.

Greater Chennai Corporation officials said the change in name of the local body would make residents in added areas realise that they belong to the first city of modern India.

“The need for infrastructure development in added areas is high. We can easily get grant from international agencies because of this change,” said an official of the Corporation.

Additional funding this year is likely to facilitate speedy implementation of the project to develop LED lighting in added areas. The civic body requires at least Rs.145 crore for completing the LED streetlight project in added areas.

சென்னை மாநகராட்சியானது 10 மண்டலங்கள், 155 வார்டுகளுடன் 174 சதுர கிலோமீட்டர் பரப்பளவில் செயல்பட்டு வந்தது. பின்னர் காஞ்சீபுரம் மற்றும் திருவள்ளூர் மாவட்டங்களில் உள்ள 42 உள்ளாட்சி அமைப்புகள் சென்னை மாநகராட்சியுடன் இணைக்கப்பட்டு, அதன் பரப்பளவினை 174 சதுர கிலோமீட்டரிலிருந்து 426 சதுர கிலோமீட்டராக விரிவாக்கம் செய்ததைத் தொடர்ந்து, சென்னை மாநகராட்சியினை “பெருநகர சென்னை மாநகராட்சி” எனப்பெயர் மாற்றம் செய்து 26.10.2015 அன்று அரசாணை வெளியிடப்பட்டது.
