Rajya Sabha discusses the Juvenile Justice Bill Tuesday Dec 22,2015

The Bill aimed at amending the Juvenile Justice Act and treat convicts who are 16 and above like adults in crimes like rape and murder has been listed 11 times in the last one year.

The Juvenile Justice Amendment Act has already been passed in the Lok Sabha

Present in Parliament as the Rajya Sabha debates the Bill  are Asha Devi and Badrinath, the parents of Jyoti Singh, a 23-year-old medical student who was gang-raped by six men on a moving bus in Delhi on December 16, 2012. She died in a Singapore hospital 13 days later.

Women and Child Welfare minister Maneka Gandhi opened the discussion stating that the government is not implementing an arbitrary law to send 16-year-olds to jail, but creating another legal layer to review juvenile crimes on a case by case basis
