Malaysia's Opposition Forms New Alliance Against Scandal-Hit Najib Tuesday Sep 22,2015

Two of Malaysia's opposition parties which used to be part of the now-defunct Pakatan Rakyat alliance on Tuesday Sep 22,2015 announced the formation of a new coalition - Pakatan Harapan (Alliance of Hope).

Jailed opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim's Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) and the Chinese-based Democratic Action Party (DAP) have joined forces with the newly formed Parti Amanah Negara (PAN) to form the new alliance.

PAN is a splinter party of the Islamist Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS).

Pakatan Rakyat ceased to function in June after PAS, one of the parties in the alliance, severed ties with the DAP over differences which arose over the PAS' push for the implementation of an Islamic penal code in Kelantan.

The new alliance hopes to get the ball rolling by opening its doors to all parties, including those from Prime Minister Najib Razak's ruling Barisan Nasional coalition.

In particular, the Opposition wants all 47 parliamentarians from Sabah and Sarawak, to leave the Barisan Nasional and join them.
