Japanese Consumer Electronic Giant Sony commences manufacturing (on contract basis) of LED TV's in Tami Nadu

Bravia line of TVs at Foxconn’s plant near Chennai

Japanese consumer electronics giant Sony has started manufacturing of LED televisions in India, and the first batch of locally-made products will go on sale in this month. The televisions will be contract manufactured at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu.
“India has been an important strategic market for Sony, and this development underlines our continued commitment to this market as well as our alignment with the Government’s ‘Make in India’ programme. The televisions will be manufactured at Competition Team Technology India’s (CTTI) facility in Chennai,” Sony India MD Kenichiro Hibi told

CTTI is a subsidiary of Foxconn Group. India is the only country where the consumer electronic giant has taken the contract route for manufacturing of its ‘Bravia’ televisions series.

Initially, the company will manufacture 43-inches televisions at the unit, and will gradually add more products

 Note

It is to be noted that Sony  has set up its own facilities for this purpose in Malaysia, China, Japan  and Brazil.

India is the fourth-largest market for Sony, after the US, China and Japan. Sony India clocked Rs 10,600 crore sales in 2014-15

Sony exited India manufacturing in 2004 when it shut down its facility in Haryana that mostly made music systems and home theatres. This plant also used to make TV apart from audio products.

India's free trade agreement with Southeast Asian nations had allowed imports at zero duty and since Sony had a poor market share of 3-4 per cent in televisions in the country, it decided to source them from Thailand, Malaysia, China and Japan rather than producing  in India
