he Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) may have created a record of sorts by
winning 67 seats out of the 70 in the Delhi assembly election, but the
records that the Sikkim Sangram Parishad (SSP) and the Sikkim Democratic
Front (SDF) created in 1989 and 2009, respectively, by winning all the
32 seats remain unbroken.
While the SSP led by Nar Bahadur Bhandari had created the record of 100 per cent sweep of the 32-member Sikkim Assembly in 1989, the feat was repeated 20 years later by Pawan Kumar Chamling’s SDF. Though Chamling continues to be the chief minister since 1994, the SDF’s strength came down to 22 in the 2014 Assembly polls.
Sikkim got its first elected government in 1979 with Darjeeling-educated former school teacher Bhandari launching the Sikkim Janata Parishad in 1977.
