2015 Africa Cup of Nations Final Ivory Coast Vs Ghana Sunday Feb 08,2015

 

The Ivory Coast are playing in their 20th Africa Cup of Nations tournament and played in the final in2006 and 2012,losing in shootouts after goalless draws against Egypt and Zambia respectively

Ghana are also playing in their 20th tournament, and their 9th final. Ghana have previously won 4 (1963, 1965,1978,1982)and lost 4 (1968,1970,1992,2010)

Ivory Coast Win 9-8 on penalties 




Ivory Coast goalkeeper Boubacar Barry saved the day, and then he scored the winner. The 35-year-old veteran blocked a penalty attempt from opposing goalkeeper Razak Braimah and then stepped up to convert his own to give the Ivory Coast a 9-8 shootout win over Ghana on Sunday in the African Cup of Nations final.



The victory gave the Ivorians their second title, in a repeat of the 1992 final.That year, Ivory Coast won 11-10 on penalties also after a goalless draw.


Ivory Coast will be delighted to have emulated the feat having gone close twice since - in 2006 and 2012 - on the latter occasion losing to Zambia, who were then coached by current Ivory Coast coach Herve Renard.

Ivory Coast coach Herve Renard,the Frenchman's success as coach of the Elephants makes him the first man to win the title with two countries.

While Ghana coach Avram Grant has now suffered defeats on penalties in two major finals, having lost the 2008 Champions League to Manchester United when he was Chelsea boss



Ivory Coast goalkeeper Boubacar Barry scored the decisive spot-kick to seal the victory against Ghana.

Ivory Coast Captain Yaya Toure, who won the Premier League with Manchester City last season, described winning the cup as "unbelievable".
"When you win with your club, it's quite amazing," he said. "With your country, it's unbelievable."

Ivory Coast announced a public holiday on Monday to celebrate its dramatic win over Ghana in the Africa Cup of Nations final.
The game was followed by joyous celebrations on the streets the country's biggest city, Abidjan.Celebrations in Abidjan went on late into the night on Sunday

Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara announced the paid holiday on public radio and television after the game.
The team are due to arrive back home on Monday afternoon, with a celebration planned at the city's Felix Houphouet-Boigny football stadium.
Announcements on local radio requested that fans stay away from the stadium as its 35,000 capacity had already been reached.
