Brahma will be taking over as the Chief Election Commissioner after
present CEC Veeravalli Sundaram Sampath retires on Thursday Jan 15,2015
HS Brahma, who currently holds the position of Election Commissioner and a retired IAS officer from the Andhra Pradesh cadre's 1975 batch, Mr
Brahma hails from the state of Assam. He assumed charge as Election
Commissioner on August 24, 2010, post his retirement from the position
of Secretary in the Ministry of Power.
After J M Lyndogh, Brahma will become the second officer from the northeast to be appointed to this post.
Note
The Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners are appointed
by the President for a tenure of six years or up to the age of 65.
The
Chief Election Commissioner can be removed from office only through
impeachment by Parliament.
