2014 Malawian General Election Tuesday May 20,2014



General elections will be held in Malawi on May 20,2014.


Malawi is one the poorest countries in the world and is heavily dependent on aid, with donors proving 40% of the budget.

They will also be Malawi's first tripartite elections, meaning that it is the first time the people of Malawi will vote for their local government, members of parliament and President in a single election

The candidate with the most votes is declared the winner of the presidential race - there is no run-off.

 President Joyce Banda facing three strong challengers.

Joyce Banda came to power two years ago after the sudden death of President Bingu wa Mutharika.
Her reputation has been dented by a corruption scandal, known as Cashgate, which has led donors to cut aid.
Her main challengers are -
  • Mutharika's brother, Peter
  • Atupele Muluzi - the son of another former president  and
  • a former preacher, Lazarus Chakwera.
Chakwera is the candidate of the Malawi Congress Party, which governed from independence in 1964 until the first multi-party poll in 1994

 Peter Mutharika Wins Presidential Election Friday May 30,2014
Democratic Progressive Party leader Peter Mutharika was declared the winner of Malawi's disputed presidential election on Friday after defeating President Joyce Banda.

Peter Mutharika, the brother of former president Bingu wa Mutharika, got 36.4 % of the votes cast  Lazarus Chakwera of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP),got 27.8 %of the votes and Incumbent Joyce Banda got  20.2 % of the Votes, the electoral commission said
