The Lok Sabha election campaign is reaching its peak in Tripura, with 25
candidates, the highest so far, contesting in the two constituencies of
the only Left-ruled State.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist), in power in the State for many
years with decisive support from the electorate, is working hard not
only to win but also to enhance its vote share.
The last bastion of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Tripura, is
once again set to chose between the two main contestants in the state,
the CPM and the Congress.
Although CPI(M) has lost its grip over West Bengal and Kerala, Tripura remains the party's stronghold.
This was quite evident from the results
of the Assembly polls held in the state last year.
Out of 60 Assembly
constituencies, CPI(M) won 49 seats, reducing Congress to just 10 seats
while CPI won 1 seat.
Moreover, the state witnessed a record voter
turnout of more than 92%.
The state is expected to follow a similar pattern when Lok Sabha polls are held on April 7 in Tripura West and April 12 in Tripura East.
Tripura East is reserved for candidates belonging to the Scheduled Tribes (ST). The state is represented by a single member in the Rajya Sabha.
Earlier the Congress had some sway in the state but that receded after CPI(M) started gaining in strength mainly by organising government employees through its powerful front organisation 'Tripura Employees Co-ordination Committee' (TECC).
The Left Front has been in power since 1978 barring one term (1988-1993) when the Congress and Tripura Upajati Juba Samiti formed a winning coalition.
Out of the 15 elections held in Tirpura's two Lok Sabha seats, the Marxists have convincingly won the East Tripura seat 11 times while the West Tripura seat has gone to Marxists 10 times.
The
anti-incumbency factor hardly matters in the state.

For the seat of Tripura West, there is expected to be a multi-cornered contest between the CPM, Congress, TMC and BJP.
Among the 13 candidates, major contestants in the fray include are CPM's Shankar Prasad Dutta, Congress' Arunoday Saha, BJP's state unit chief Sudhindra Dasgupta, and chairman of the state unit of TMC Ratan Chakraborty.
The CPI(M) has won the seat 10 out of 15 times between 1952 and 2009.
Since 1996, the CPI(M) has consistently won this seat.
Of the 12,46,794 voters for this seat 6,34,702 are men and the remaining women.
Altogether 1,605 polling stations have been set up for the constituency of which two have been identified as veryvulnerable and 486 as vulnerable.

A high turnout of 85 % was recorded for one Lok Sabha seat in Tripura, while Assam registered 76 % in 5 seats in the first phase of the elections, which began peacefully on Monday April 07,2014
Tezpur recorded 75 per cent voting, Jorhat 76 %, Lakhimpur 76% Dibrugarh 70% and Kaliabor 80 %
In the last Lok Sabha polls in 2009, the voter turnout was 84.45 per cent and in 2004 it was 67.39 per cent across Tripura
