2014 Lok Sabha Election Dates Announced Wednesday March 05,2014


The Election Commission of India(ECI)announced that the 16th Lok Sabha Elections will be held from April 7 to May 12,2014 in 9 Phases -April 7, 9, 10, 12, 17, 24, 30, May 7 and May 12,2014
Indian elections are supposed to be the greatest democratic show on earth. The number of voters has increased from 173.2 million in 1951 to 400.4m in 1984 to 814m in 2014. The expenditure in the first Lok Sabha was Rs 0.6 per voter; it is now Rs 12.09. 

The highest cost for an election exclusively using EVM was Rs 1113.9 crore in 2004. The number of seats is 543, with constituencies frozen till 2026.



Assembly elections will also be held simultaneously in the states of Andhra Pradesh, including the Telangana region, Orissa and Sikkim

An estimated 81.4 crore voters will be eligible to vote in the coming elections after 9.71 crore new voters have been added to the rolls since the last elections

India’s electorate for the upcoming general election will be 81.5 crore, summary revision data released by the Election Commission shows. The electorate is now nearly five times what it was when India first voted, over 60 years ago in 1951

The electorate grew by 64 % over the last 20 years even while the overall population grew by just 43 %

The electorate has grown at double the pace between the last general election and the present one than it had between 2004 and 2009


Special camps will be organised at all polling stations on March 9 for voters to verify, add or modify their details in the electoral list

Election Commission of Of India(ECI)has decided to distribute photo election slips with polling station details at his/her doorstep, within 3-7 days from the date of the poll.

The ECI has decided to use EVM's in all the polling stations of the country as was done in the 2004 and 2009 elections


The ECI has decided to use voter verifiable paper audit trial(VVPAT)system in some of the constituencies subject to the availability of number of units


The SC has ordered in Sep 2013 that ''None of the Above'(NOTA)option on the ballot papers and EVM's should be implemented


The 2014 Lok Sabha elections will see the introduction of "None of the Above" (NOTA) option in voting


For the 2014 Lok Sabha Polls, candidates in a Parliamentary constituency in bigger states can spend up to Rs 70 lakh on their campaign, up from Rs 40 lakh in 2011. In the 2009 elections, it was Rs 25 lakh. 

Among the States,the polling schedule fixed are 
  • UP and Bihar will vote over 6- phases 
  • West Bengal and Jammu & Kashmir over 5- phases 
  •  Assam, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra over 3- phases
  •  Andhra Pradesh, Manipur, Odisha, Rajasthan and Tripura over 2-phases
  •  Gujarat, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Uttarkhand and Goa, a majority of north-eastern states and Union territories including Delhi -Single-Day Polling
