2014 Lok Sabha Election Phase 1 April 07,2014


The Election Commission of India(ECI)announced that the 16th Lok Sabha Elections will be held from April 7 to May 12,2014 in 9 Phases -April 7, 9, 10, 12, 17, 24, 30, May 7 and May 12,2014


Counting for all polls will be held on May 16,2014


With the election schedule announced on Wednesday March 05,2014, Model Code of Conduct for elections comes into force with immediate effect



  • Phase 1 on April 07,2014 cover 2 states and 6 constituencies
  • Phase 2 on April 09,2014 cover 5 states and 7 constituencies
  • Phase 3 on April 10,2014 cover 14 states and 92 constituencies
  • Phase 4 on April 12,2014 cover   3 states and 5 constituencies
  • Phase 5 on April 17,2014 cover 13 states and UTs and 122 constituencies
  • Phase 6 on April 24,2014 cover 12 states and 117 constituencies
  • Phase 7 on April 30,2014 cover 9 states and 89 constituencies
  • Phase 8on May 07,2014 cover  7 states and 64 constituencies
  • Phase 9 on May 12,2014 cover 3 states and 41 constituencies






The notification for the first of the nine-phased Lok Sabha polls was issued on Friday March 14,2014

With this the process to constitute the 16th Lok Sabha begins in Assam and Tripura

During the Phase 1 of elections on April 7,2014 polls will be held for -
Assam  - 5 of the 14 parliamentary constituencies
Tripura - 1  of the 02 parliamentary constituencies
Assam Lok Sabha Constituencies(5) -Tezpur,Kaliabor,Jorhat,Dibrugarh(ST) and Lakhimpur
Tripura Lok Sabha Constituencies(1) -Tripura(West)

Assam Phase I Election -5 Constituencies


The Congress, BJP, Trinamool Congress, AIUDF, AGP, AAP, SUCI, CPI(M), AIFB and SP are contesting in the 5 seats - Tezpur, Koliabor, Jorhat, Dibrugarh and Lakhimpur during the first phase of elections in the Congress-ruled state

Among the 51 candidates are Union Ministers Ranee Narah and Paban Singh Ghatowar, sitting MP Bijoy Krishna Handique, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi's son Gourav Gogoi and Bhupen Kumar Bora from the Congress.

Congress rebel and Independent candidate Moni Kumar Subba is also in the fray.

For the BJP, its unit president Sorbananda Sonowal and Kamakhya Prasad Tasa are contesting, while AGP's nominees are Arun Kumar Sarma, Pradip Hazarika and Joseph Toppo.

An electorate of 64,41,634, including 31,20,067 women, are expected to exercise their franchise at 8,588 polling stations.


Former Union Minister and sitting MP Bijoy Krishna Handique, contesting as Congress nominee from Jorhat, also cast his vote with his family members.


With 6.5 lakh first time voters registered this time, long queues were seen in front of the polling booths.
Most of the early morning voters were women who said they wanted to cast their ballot before they get busy in household chores for the day.

Tripura Phase I Election - Tripura West Constituency

Of the two constituencies - Tripura West and Tripura East (ST), election is being held in Tripura West constituency on Monday  April 07,2014

For the seat of Tripura West, there is expected to be a multi-cornered contest between the CPM, Congress, TMC and BJP.

Among the 13 candidates, major contestants in the fray include are CPM's Shankar Prasad Dutta, Congress' Arunoday Saha, BJP's state unit chief Sudhindra Dasgupta, and chairman of the state unit of TMC Ratan Chakraborty.

The CPI(M) has won the seat 10 out of 15 times between 1952 and 2009.

 Since 1996, the CPI(M) has consistently won this seat.

Of the 12,46,794 voters for this seat 6,34,702 are men and the remaining women. 

Altogether 1,605 polling stations have been set up for the constituency of which two have been identified as veryvulnerable and 486 as vulnerable.

A high turnout of 85 % was recorded for one Lok Sabha seat in Tripura, while Assam registered 76 % in 5 seats in the first phase of the elections, which began peacefully on Monday April 07,2014
In Assam, 76 % of the electorate cast their votes with a large number of EVMs malfunctioning and a re-poll being considered in some places.
Tezpur recorded 75 per cent voting, Jorhat 76 %, Lakhimpur 76% Dibrugarh 70% and Kaliabor 80 %



In Assam, prominent among the 51 candidates are Union ministers and Congress nominees Paban Singh Ghatowar (Dibrugarh) and Ranee Narah (Lakhimpur), besides former union minister and sitting Congress MP Bijoy Krishna Handique (Jorhat).
Others were Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi's son Gaurav Gogoi (Kaliabor), Congress rebel and Independent candidate Moni Kumar Subba and BJP state unit president Sabananda Sonowal (Lakhimpur).
In the 2009 Lok Sabha elections in the state, the Congress won seven of the 14 seats, its alliance partner BPF one, BJP four and AIUDF one.
