Chilean Presidential Election Run-Off Sunday Dec 15,2013

Polls across Chile are due to open at 08:00 local time (11:00 GMT) and will close 10 hours later

Chileans are due to go to the polls in a presidential run-off, with Michelle Bachelet widely expected to win
Michelle Bachelet(62) leads an alliance of her Socialist Party, Christian Democrats and Communists and has campaigned on policies designed to reduce the gap between rich and poor
The left-wing candidate faces Evelyn Matthei, a former minister in the governing centre-right coalition

 Evelyn Matthei(60) has called for a continuation of the policies of outgoing President Sebastian Pinera


The contenders are the daughters of air force generals, once friends, who found themselves on opposite sides when Gen Augusto Pinochet seized power in 1973.

A presidential election was held on Sunday Nov 17,2013 in Chile.Provisional results show none of the candidates secured an absolute majority of the valid votes, thus a Run-Off Election is scheduled for Dec 15,2013

The Constitution bars Sebastian Pinera, the incumbent president, from seeking immediate reelection.
 

Under the Constitution of Chile,the President is elected to serve for a period of four years, with immediate re-election being prohibited

This was the first presidential election in Chile in which all eligible voters were automatically enrolled, and where voting was no longer mandatory.

Left-wing candidate Michelle Bachelet has won the first round of voting in Chile's presidential election polling 47% of the vote. 

A paediatrician by training, Michelle Bachelet was Chile's first woman president between 2006 and 2010

 

 

 

Her main rival, Evelyn Matthei, who was a minister in the centre-right government of Sebastian Pinera, got 25% of the votes polled

 

 As no candidate has secured majority of votes,a presidential run-off is scheduled for Dec 15,2013
