Yercaud Assembly By-Poll on Dec 4,2013

The Election Commission of India(ECI) announced its plan to hold the Yercaud Assembly by-election on Dec 4,2013 and with that the State will be facing the fourth by-election since the formation of the present Assembly in May 2011


The by-poll has been necessitated by the death of the ruling AIADMK Party legislator C. Perumal in July 2013


Located in the Salem district, the Yercaud constituency is one of the two seats reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST), the other being Senthamangalam in the neighbouring Namakkal district


Of the five elections, the AIADMK won on three occasions (1991, 2001 and 2011) and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam twice (1996 and 2006)

As on October 1, 2013 [when draft electoral rolls were published for the entire State], the strength of electors in Yercaud was about 2.35 lakh. Women are marginally higher than men. Their number is 1,17,771 whereas men account for 1,16,958

This election will assume significance as it will be for the first time in the State that electronic voting machines and ballot papers will have a provision for “none of the above” option as per SC Ruling on Sep 27, 2013

DMK Nominate V. Maran(36)as Candidate
V. Maran, a 36-year-old Salem-based businessman,, who is involved in the business of transportation of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders and who hails from a family of former MLAs of Yercaud, was on Friday Oct 11,2013 named the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)’s nominee for the by-election to be held in the constituency on December 4,2013

AIADMK Nominate P Saroja as Candidate

AIADMK on Wednesday Oct 23,2013 nominated P. Saroja, wife of the deceased Member of Legislative Assembly C. Perumal, for the by-election to the Yercaud constituency
After the announcement, Ms. Saroja called on Chief Minister and AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa

Filing of Nomination
Filing of nominations for the Yercaud Assembly by-election will begin on November 9.
According to Returning Officer (RO) and District Adi Dravida and Tribal Welfare Officer T. Sabapathy, nominations can be filed from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on all days from November 9 to 16 (excluding November 10 and 14)
Nominations will be scrutinised on November 18, while the last date for withdrawal is November 20,2013

On day one Nov 09,2013 of the filing on nominations for the December 4 by-election to the Yercaud Assembly constituency, six nominees filed their papers
Of these, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s V. Maran was the only candidate from a registered and recognised political party.
Others who filed their nominations were C. Venkatachalam (33) of Dravida Ambedkar Makkal Katchi (DAMK) and Independents P.N. Sriramachandran (33) and M. Iliyas (46).

DMK complains of poll code violation by AIADMK

In a petition to Tamil Nadu Chief Electoral office Praveen Kumar, DMK Organising Secretary T.K.S. Elangovan charged Loganathan, a government noon meal scheme co-ordinator at a local school, with canvassing for AIADMK candidate P. Saroja along with the Highways Minister Edappadi Palanisamy.
A section of local media had reported this alongside photographs, he said, recalling that the party had been repeatedly taking up cases of violation of model code of conduct against AIADMK.
